Recognize Colonial-style Chippendale Furniture When You See It!
Georgian colonial style, colonial style decoration, dutch colonial style
Chippendale has nothing to do with Chipmunks, the characters (Chip ‘n
Dale) created by Walt Disney; here, we are talking about antique furniture!
It was a cabinetmaker named Thomas Chippendale who designed a special
type of furniture during Colonial times (1750-1780). American furnishings
crafted in the same manner were henceforth known as Chippendale furniture.
However, according to some experts, these styles were not as flamboyant
as their English counterparts; rather, they were more conservative in
nature.
Now, if you are a novice concerning antiques, you might find it slightly
difficult to differentiate between varied types of furniture (everything
might look the same from a distance!). So here is some information on
Chippendale furnishings—
(1) If you should notice pieces crafted from mahogany, then rest assured
that they are the best and the most expensive! The lower-priced ones have
probably used wood from Cherry, Maple and Walnut trees.
(2) Take a look at the legs now; they represent what is known as the
Cabriole style (the knee of the piece curves outward and the ankle curves
inward).
(3) The legs end in a very ornamental style known as claw-and-ball feet
(similar to a bird’s claw holding a ball).
(4) Of course, not everyone was interested in following the same design.
So you should be seeing some pieces with classically fluted or reeded
legs as well. Cabinetmakers from Rhode Island and Newport preferred it
this way. Then, there were the Philadelphia lot who went in for more elaborate
carvings, influenced as they were by the Rococo style!
(5) Straight legs are visible on small tables and side chairs.
(6) The top railings of most chairs represent a yoked shape, while intricate
piercing is visible on the back splats of side chairs and arm chairs.
Again, it is not necessary that all Chippendale chairs are so ornate in
design.
(7) Where fabric is concerned, it is nothing but the best for a Chippendale
piece! The upholstery on stools, chairs and settees is truly beautiful.
(8) A selective preference for additional decorations such as shell motifs
dating from the Queen Anne period can be noted on some furnishings.
The above-mentioned guidelines should suffice to recognize Chippendale
furniture. Oh yes, you might see furniture pieces dating back to the 1900s
(late Victorian period), which seem very similar in style to Chippendale
furniture—but a closer look should reveal that they cannot boast of the
same marvelous craftsmanship. Bits and pieces of the Chippendale designs
are still visible even in modern furniture, since the influence is still
there. But, whatever anyone might say or think, a copy can never be as
good as the original! .
